    • Emma SPENCER purchased a cemetery lot at Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth on 10 September 1932. At that time her address was recorded as being in Truro; it is unknown whether or not she was a widow at that time. "My mother often spoke of this cemetery lot. She said Emma had saved to have a monument erected with some type of wall around it. My mother had always wanted to see it one day, but she never did. She said once, just prior to her own death, that she might have liked to have been buried there with Emma. I now realize Emma was her grandmother. Sadly, when Cynthia and I visited this grave in 2004, we discovered it was an unmarked grave. Where the monies went for the monument I have no idea; I'm so glad my mother never knew." (Anne Brooks)

    • Marriage solemnized at the Register Office in the District of Plymouth, 13 January 1912: John Charles SPENCER, 67 years, Widower, Plasterer Journeyman, 5 Grenville Road, Plymouth, son of Thomas SPENCER (Deceased), Builder; married Emma HORSWILL, 55 years, Widow, ---, 8 Gascoyne Street, Plymouth, daughter of Ebenezer HORSWILL (Deceased) Builder. Witnesses were Edward G. HORSWILL and Charles E. VICKERY.

[Apparently Emma incorrectly provided, her age as 55, and her husband's name (Ebenezer HORSWILL, Deceased) as her father on this document. Perhaps she did not know, in truth, if her husband, Ebenezer, was alive or that he had deserted her; he did not appear on any census after 1881, but did not die until 1934.

The witness, Edward G. HORSWILL, would have been Emma's son. The witness, Charles E. VICKERY, was her daughter Phoebe's husband.

My mother spoke often of "Emma SPENCER" and said she lived in Truro.] Anne Brooks [9]
