"Their marriage listing in the Digger's South Australian Marriage Index 1842-1916 indicates he was 16 years younger than Mary, but in truth she was 25 years older than her new husband, as their marriage certificate records her age incorrectly as 40 and not her true age of 49. This difference in their age, although quite large, wasn't that unusual at the time. It was fairly common for single men or women to marry widowed people much older than themselves."
